Program Description
The purpose of this program is to inform nurse anesthetists about the growing body of evidence supporting the use of Nasal High Flow Oxygen (HFNO) to optimize oxygenation during monitored anesthesia care and peri-intubation practice. Systematic reviews and meta-analysis demonstrate the use of NHFO can extend safe apnea time, reduce the need to perform airway maneuvers, and reduce procedural interruptions (during MAC). These attributes have significant implications for increased patient safety and work practice efficiency.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the mechanisms of High Flow Nasal Oxygen (HFNO).
  • Describe clinical use of HFNO for Monitored Anesthesia Care/spontaneous breathing applications.
  • Describe the clinical use of HFNO for Apneic Oxygenation/peri-intubation applications.
  • Identify patient factors which may indicate HFNO application.

It is estimated that this activity will take approximately 1 hour to complete. To receive 1 credit, learner must receive a minimum score of 80% on the post-test. Only 1 attempt is permitted to reach 80% score.

The certificate of completion is available for download once all requirements have been met. The certificate is also stored and accessible via the learner’s secure online dashboard and can be re-downloaded on demand at any time once they have completed the activity.
