Program Summary

Program Description

This educational session provides a comprehensive overview of high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy as a respiratory support modality for infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of action of HFNC, explore current evidence-based research, and examine the clinical practice of transitioning infants from pressure-based to flow-based respiratory support.

Through a review of key physiological principles, recent studies, and clinical protocols, attendees will develop a deeper appreciation of the role HFNC plays in neonatal respiratory management. This session will also provide an opportunity to discuss best practices, challenges, and considerations when implementing HFNC in the NICU setting.

Objectives

  • Review the mechanisms of action of high flow nasal cannula for the infant.
  • Evaluate the current evidence-based research for the utilization of HFNC for the infant.
  • Discuss current practice of transitioning from pressure-based interface to flow-based interface in the NICU.
